Therapeutic and Vaccine Research Program

The Therapeutic and Vaccine Research program conducts clinical studies across a range of infectious diseases, with a particular focus on therapies for HIV, hepatitis B and COVID-19, as well as complications from infectious diseases more broadly.

Our trials assess the real world effectiveness of new treatments and therapeutic strategies, and also support laboratory studies to better understand the underlying mechanisms of disease causation and treatment response. Studies we’ve led have been instrumental in defining the current standard treatment for HIV globally. We are also leaders in establishing a new generation of trials focussing on optimising HIV treatments for resource limited settings, and reducing the long term health impacts of HIV worldwide.

Our team provides global leadership through our role as an International Coordinating Centre for the INSIGHT network, a major international collaboration for the conduct of large clinical trials in HIV and other viruses, which has more than 300 sites in 30 countries. We also maintain productive collaborations with UNITAID at the World Health Organization, the UK Medical Research Council, and the National Cancer Institute and National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the US National Institutes of Health.
