About your speaker
Susana has a multidisciplinary background, combining degrees and experience in biochemistry, neurosciences, health policy and international development, and field epidemiology in tropical diseases. She has lived and worked in more than 10 countries in all continents. Susana has recently joined the Kirby Institute at UNSW Sydney, where she will continue her research program on neglected tropical diseases, by useing intervention studies to generate evidence that can inform health policy changes for more effective and sustainable disease control strategies.
Abstract
Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) remain a significant global health problem, with chronic infections associated with anaemia and impaired development. The main strategy for STH control is the regular delivery of anthelminthic drugs, mainly targeting children. Given that poor hygiene and environmental contamination lead to rapid reinfection, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) interventions have been proposed as a complement to deworming programs. Despite recent progress, numerous questions remain. We will review our recent contributions to research that aims to optimize strategies for STH control.
