The HIV, viral hepatitis and sexually transmissible infections in Australia: Annual surveillance report including data to the end of 2020 will be released early 2022.

Key findings
  • There were 633 new HIV diagnoses in 2020. This represents a decline of 37 per cent over five years.
  • While long term trends suggest HIV is declining in Australia, the decline in HIV notifications in 2020 is likely strongly influence by COVID-19, including changes to sexual behaviour, healthcare access and testing practices, and travel.
  • The number of new HIV diagnoses among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples fluctuated over the last five years.
  • Among gay and bisexual men, HIV diagnoses have declined by over 44 per cent in the past five years.
  • The numbers of new HIV diagnoses among heterosexuals and people born overseas remained steady between 2016 and 2019 but declined between 2019 and 2020.
