Dr Dathan Byonanebye is a Scientia PhD student in the Biostatistics and Databases Program. His PhD aims at understanding the risk and predictors of long-term complications in patients living with HIV. He obtained his medical degree and specialist training in Internal Medicine from Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda. Prior to his PhD studentship, Dathan was a faculty at the Makerere University School of Public Health, Kampala, Uganda. His research career spans almost ten years of clinical and health systems research. Dathan’s previous work on the EARLI and SEARCH clinical trials heralded the adoption and scale-up of universal antiretroviral therapy in Uganda. The EARLI study determined efficacy and acceptability of early ART in Uganda, while SEARCH, a large cluster randomized trial in Kenya and Uganda, determined changes in population-level HIV metrics after the achievement of the UNIADS ambitious 90-90-90. Dathan still supports research in Uganda where he co-investigates research projects to determine whether digital and novel technologies to strengthen health systems and enhance HIV and NCD services in developing countries. Dathan’s long term research interests include optimizing care for non-communicable diseases in HIV-infected patients.
