Scientia Professor Gregory Dore Head, Viral Hepatitis Clinical Research Program, Kirby Institute, UNSW Sydney Professor Greg Dore is Head of the Viral Hepatitis Clinical Research Program at Kirby Institute, UNSW Sydney, and Infectious Diseases Physician at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney, Australia. He has been involved in viral hepatitis and HIV epidemiological and clinical research, clinical care and public health policy for 20 years. He has developed extensive national and international collaborations, and is internationally recognised in the areas of HCV natural history and epidemiology, therapeutic strategies for acute and chronic HCV infection, particularly among people who inject drugs, and HCV elimination strategies. Senior Lecturer, Viral Hepatitis Clinical Research Program, Kirby Institute, UNSW Sydney Behzad Hajarizadeh is a Senior Lecturer and an NHMRC Fellow in the Viral Hepatitis Clinical Research Program at the Kirby Institute. He trained as a Medical Practitioner and has a Masters in Public Health (MPH) and PhD in Medicine (Clinical Epidemiology). His main area of expertise is viral hepatitis with more than 15 years experience as a clinician and researcher in the field of liver diseases. His employment history includes working as a Research Fellow in La Trobe University, Melbourne and as a Senior Research Officer and Project Coordinator in the Ministry of Health and UNAIDS country office in Iran. |

Lecturer, Viral Hepatitis Clinical Research Program, Kirby Institute, UNSW Sydney Marianne Martinello is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Viral Hepatitis Clinical Research Program, Kirby Institute and an Infectious Diseases Physician at Blacktown Mt Druitt Hospital, Sydney. Her research interests include therapeutic strategies for acute and chronic HCV infection, including co-infection with HIV. |

PhD Student, Viral Hepatitis Clinical Research Program, Kirby Institute, UNSW Sydney Heather Valerio received her BS in Health Sciences from Boston University and MPH from University of Glasgow. After a few years working in hepatitis C epidemiology and surveillance in Scotland, she joined the Viral Hepatitis Clinical Research Program to complete a PhD with a thesis focusing on the hepatitis C cascade of care among people who inject drugs. |
Abstract
Four major hepatitis C (HCV) studies were presented by Kirby Institute academics at the International Liver Congress in Vienna, April 2019:
- SMART-C, a randomised controlled trial of simplified versus standard DAA treatment monitoring;
- TARGET3D+, a single-arm trial of short-course (6 week) therapy for acute/recent HCV infection;
- ETHOS ENGAGE, an observational study of HCV care cascade and elimination among people who inject drugs; and
- A systematic review and meta-analysis of HCV reinfection.
