In Indonesia, trans and gender diverse people are highly stigmatised. In this environment, the specific health needs of transgender people in Indonesia are woefully underserved. Fortunately, transgender activists like Dr Alegra Wolter are working to change this. Dr Wolter is the first openly transgender doctor in Indonesia, and is known for her community work focusing on mental and sexual health campaigns, particularly within the spectrum sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics (SOGIESC). She has also worked extensively in HIV and women’s health.
For this special In Conversation seminar, Dr Wolter is joined by Adjunct Lecturer with the Kirby Institute, Mr Teddy Cook, who is one of Australia’s fiercest advocates for trans and gender diverse people.
They will discuss the health, community, rights, and experiences of transgender people in Indonesia, and what can be done to support the progress that is so desperately needed.
