Alexander von Humboldt University Professor and Director, Institute of Public Health at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Heidelberg, Germany Professor Till Bärnighausen is Alexander von Humboldt University Professor and Director of the Institute of Public Health at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Heidelberg, Germany. He is also Adjunct Professor of Global Health at the Department of Global Health and Population, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health; Faculty Member at the Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies; and Senior Faculty at the Wellcome Trust’s Africa Health Research Institute in South Africa. Till’s research focuses on establishing the causal impact of global health interventions on population health, social and economic outcomes. In particular, he works on large-scale population health interventions for HIV, diabetes, hypertension, and vaccine-preventable diseases. Till uses design research to develop interventions and randomized controlled experiments and quasi-experiments to establish intervention impacts. He has developed several new methods for applied population health research. His research has been funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the European Commission, the Wellome Trust, NIH (including 6 R01 grants), ANRS, 3ie, the Clinton Health Access Initiative, the Elton John AIDS Foundation, the Rush Foundation, USAID, UNAIDS, UNITAID, WHO, World Bank, and GAVI. In total, he has attracted >50 million USD in research funding. In 2016, Till received the Alexander von Humobldt University Professor Award, Germany’s most highly endowed international science price awarded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and financed by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Till has published 390 peer-reviewed articles, including in Science, PNAS, Lancet and PLOS Medicine. These articles have been cited more than 20,000 (for an i10-index of 224 and an h-index of 66). |
Abstract
Major preventable and treatable diseases are cutting into life expectancies and inhibit human development in many countries worldwide. Interventions to prevent and treat diseases can thus lead to major improvements in population health, social and economic outcomes. I will present modern interventions research – including all stages of the research process, with examples from large-scale population and health systems intervention studies in Africa and Asia, including novel programs to fight HIV, diabetes and hypertension. I will show empirical evidence for substantial improvements in population health, educational attainment, labor market productivity and social functioning.
