Dr H. Manisha Yapa Manisha Yapa is an infectious diseases physician with a research interest in global health and health systems strengthening. Her PhD focusses on interventions to improve the HIV care cascade using data from rural South Africa. Prior to joining the Kirby Institute, Manisha was the clinical project manager of a stepped-wedge trial of CQI at the Wellcome Trust-funded Africa Health Research Institute in Mtubatuba, KwaZulu-Natal. |
Abstract
Improving healthcare quality is an essential part of health systems strengthening in resource-poor settings. South Africa has the highest HIV burden and largest ART programme in the world, with an estimated 7.7 million people living with HIV. Yet clinical care guidelines are not rigorously implemented. The impact of continuous quality improvement (CQI) on antenatal HIV care quality, its implementation, and the impact of a major policy change on CD4 at ART initiation among men and women, are examined.
