This presentation summarises the new findings about HIV ‘treatment as prevention’ presented at AIDS 2016, including the final results of the first phase of the European PARTNER Study, progress on HIV treatment cascades from various jurisdictions, and large-scale cluster randomised trials of ‘test and treat’ strategies in African settings.

"PrEP"
HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a promising new HIV prevention strategy, particularly in gay and bisexual men. There was a significant focus on PrEP, and developments in the field at the recent AIDS2016 conference in Durban, South Africa, with outgoing IAS president Chris Beyrer declaring “it is now time to start the PrEP access era”. This presentation summarises some of the main findings presented at the conference, including the investigation of different dosing schedules (IPERGAY and ADAPT studies) and formulations (long-acting injectables and vaginal rings), the management of PrEP in clinical settings, and PrEP implementation projects around the world.
Bio:
Rebecca Guy is an Associate Professor and Program Head with the Surveillance Evaluation and Research Program in the Kirby Institute for infection and immunity in society, Faculty of Medicine, UNSW. She is an epidemiologist with expertise in surveillance and public health interventions related to HIV and sexually transmissible infections . Her research focuses on reducing the impact of sexually transmissible infections (STIs) in vulnerable populations, including implementation and evaluation of testing, point-of-care testing and treatment interventions to prevent transmission of HIV and STIs in a range of settings.
Ben Bavinton has worked in the field of HIV prevention, research and policy for over 10 years both in Australia and internationally. He is currently the Project Leader of the Kirby Institute’s Opposites Attract Study, an international, multi-site cohort study of HIV transmission and HIV treatments in gay male serodiscordant relationships.
Stefanie Vaccher joined the HIV Epidemiology and Prevention Program in 2015, and is currently undertaking her PhD which focuses on adherence to HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). She also works as the behavioural data manager on the PrELUDE and EPIC-NSW studies, which provide PrEP to a combined total of 4000 participants.
