Dr Mohamed A. Hammoud Mohamed A. Hammoud is Research Fellow in the HIV Epidemiology and Prevention Program and completed his PhD research at the Kirby Institute in 2020. His research currently focuses on licit and illicit drug use among gay and bisexual men, HIV and STI PrEP, and the impact of COVID-19 on HIV prevention, illicit drug use, and mental health. |
The Kirby Institute Postgraduate Student Prize is an annual award given to the most significant first author paper by a Kirby Institute student, published in the previous calendar year in a peer-reviewed journal in the area of infectious diseases.
Abstract
Presenting his PhD thesis entitled 'Emerging practices and the potential to change HIV epidemiological trends: Pre-exposure prophylaxis as biomedical HIV prevention among gay and bisexual men who participate in chemsex', Mohamed explores an emerging practice in HIV prevention.
PrEP as an HIV prevention strategy has started to change the trajectory of the HIV epidemic among gay and bisexual men. Using data from the Flux Study, a national cohort which launched in 2014, this presentation looks at the extent to which gay and bisexual men who engage in chemsex remain at risk of HIV in the context of PrEP.
