About your speaker
Dr Scott Hadland, MD, MPH, MS is an adolescent medicine and addiction specialist. Dr. Hadland’s clinical and research interests focus on improving care for young people with opioid use disorder. His work has been published in leading journals, including The Lancet, BMJ, Pediatrics, JAMA Pediatrics, and JAMA Internal Medicine, and he has been featured in The New York Times, NBC News, USA Today, Associated Press, Reuters, National Public Radio, The Boston Globe, and NEJM Journal Watch. He was the 2016 recipient of the New Investigator Award from the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine and holds a K23 Career Development Award from the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
Abstract
Adolescents and young adults have not been spared from the enormous rise in morbidity and mortality attributable to opioids in the United States. In this presentation, learners will review the epidemiology of opioid misuse and related harm among youth in the United States. Then, learners will review evidence-based treatment for youth, including the use of pharmacotherapy, and identify gaps in treatment for youth. Finally, learners will appreciate key differences in providing treatment for opioid use disorder to young people in comparison to adults.
