Kirby Institute Seminar Series presents

Dr Laila Khawar

Dr Laila Khawar
Senior Research Officer and PhD Student; Surveillance, Evaluation and Research Program, Kirby Institute

Dr Laila Khawar is a PhD Student and a Senior Research Officer at the Kirby institute. Her research is focused on developing new methods to track progress toward elimination of sexually transmitted infections and blood-borne viruses in Australia.

Abstract

We conducted a retrospective analysis of the perinatal HIV surveillance data in Australia for a 32-year period, 1988–2019. We reviewed patterns of potential perinatal exposure to HIV, the demographics of women living with HIV (WLHIV) who gave birth, the long-term time trends in mother-child transmission (MTCT) rates, and uptake of interventions by WLHIV during pregnancy, at birth and post-delivery. This talk will provide insight into Australia’s progress towards the WHO goal of elimination of MTCT of HIV by 2020.
