Kirby Institute Seminar Series presents

Dr Jemma Geoghegan

Dr Jemma Geoghegan
Senior Lecturer, University of Otago, New Zealand

Jemma Geoghegan is an evolutionary biologist and virologist with a strong research focus on emerging infectious disease. Her research focuses on determining the fundamental patterns and processes of viral evolution, ecology and emergence.

Abstract

New Zealand is one of a handful of countries that aimed to eliminate COVID-19. We generated SARS-CoV-2 genomes from infected patients collected during outbreaks of the disease in New Zealand. Using these data we report on the genomic diversity, transmission dynamics and spread of SARS-CoV-2. These data helped to quantify the effectiveness of public health interventions and inform the source of new outbreaks in the community. Overall, our findings demonstrate the utility of genomic pathogen surveillance to inform public health and disease mitigation.
