About your speaker
Dr Chaturaka Rodrigo is a researcher, academic and a physician. His research focus is on infectious diseases (Hepatitis C, Malaria, Dengue and Leptospirosis) and evolutionary biology of RNA viruses. He is also interested in evidence based medicine as an author affiliated to Cochrane Infectious Diseases Group, Liverpool, UK.
Abstract
Deep sequencing of hepatitis C virus has opened up new opportunities to understand how the virus evolves within and between hosts. We have established a large database of HCV sequences, isolated from acute infection time points within nine prospective cohorts in Australia, USA, Canada and the Netherlands. The data generated from this project was useful to understand the cross continental molecular epidemiology of HCV, historical trends of HCV epidemics in Australia and North America, as well as immune epitope differences of viruses isolated from acute and chronic infection time points.
