Dr Rabiah Al Adawiyah Rabiah al Adawiyah is a Scientia PhD Student at the Kirby Institute. She is a qualified medical doctor (M.D.) and holds a Bachelor of Medicine (B.Med.) from Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia and a Master of Medical Science in Health Economics, Policy and Management from the Karolinska Institute, Sweden. Her PhD project focuses on the investigation of health system barriers and facilitators to integrate and scale-up antenatal HIV and syphilis testing and treatment into Indonesian health system. |
Abstract
Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV has been a longstanding program in Indonesia, and syphilis was only integrated into the program in 2016. However, the rate of mother-to-child transmission of HIV remains the highest in the world and the coverage of antenatal syphilis testing even further lagged compared to HIV. A range of barriers to uptake and long-term engagement in care have been identified, but far less is known about supply-side and health system preparedness to deliver PMTCT of HIV and syphilis services in Indonesia. Our study explored a range of supply-side barriers and facilitators in integrating and scaling up PMTCT of HIV and syphilis services into routine antenatal care in the Indonesian healthcare system.
