Consultant, Infectious Diseases Department, Hospital Clinic of Barcelona and Associate Professor, University of Barcelona

Dr Jose Luis Blanco Arévalo is Consultant of Infectious Diseases Department at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona (Spain) and Associate Professor of the University of Barcelona (since 2015). He is Specialist in Internal Medicine (1998), has obtained a Medicine PhD from the University of Barcelona (2008) and was also a Fellow in Infectious Diseases, Stanford University (2009–2010) (California, USA) and Professor of the Master of AIDS of the University of Barcelona (since 2002).

He also has experience as a consultant in charge of research on HIV Resistance & Salvage Therapy, and Sexually Transmission Diseases & Unit and Program of Anal Canal Cancer Prevention programs in the Infectious Diseases Department, Hospital Clinic of Barcelona. He is a member  on the Scientific Committee of “Spanish Network of HIV Resistance Research”, Red Española de Investigación del SIDA (RIS), and IANS (International Anal Neoplasia Society). He is also an Assessor (in charge) of the HIV Program of Fundación Vicente Ferrer (NGO), Anantapur, Índia.

Abstract

Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) is an ulcerative and invasive sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) serovars L1, L2, and L3. Current guidelines suggest treatment with Doxycycline 100 mg twice daily for 21 days (DoxLGV). Azithromycin 1 g orally once weekly for 3 weeks (extended azithromycin regimen (EAzLGV)) may be an alternative treatment, and here we investigated its effectiveness as a treatment for LGV proctitis.
