Abstract
The HIV positive (HIV+) population in Australia is expanding and growing older, in part as a result of effective combination antiretroviral treatment (cART). The major causes of morbidity and mortality in HIV+ people are now due to age related comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, liver and bone disease (non-AIDS comorbidities). The changes in the morbidity profile of ageing HIV+ people has considerable implications for treatment, as well as policy and planning of health services for these people. The relative contribution of HIV-infection, cART and lifestyle factors to the development of these comorbidities in HIV+ people is not known. These data are needed to develop screening, prevention and advocacy programs for the larger numbers of older HIV+ people in Australia. The Australian Positive & Peers Longevity Evaluation Study (APPLES) pilot study was established to investigate the prevalence of age-related comorbidities and risk factors among older HIV positive and HIV negative gay men. This seminar will present the initial findings from APPLES.
