Sex in translation: Understanding concepts of health and relationships among Chinese people in Australia

  • 年龄介于18至69岁之间;
  • 能够阅读和理解简体中文文字;
  • 能够说和理解普通话;

Sex in translation: Understanding concepts of health and relationships among Chinese people in Australia

Your participation matters.

With your help, we can gain a better understanding and improve health care and support for Chinese people in Australia.

Why are you doing this research?

We are undertaking a study to translate the Australian Study of Health and Relationships (ASHR)* questionnaire from English to Chinese in a more culturally sensitive manner. We would also like to explore concepts of health and relationships among Chinese people in Australia.

*ASHR is one of the most important studies of sexual and reproductive health in Australia. It is conducted mainly in English and takes place every 10 years. Please click here if you want to know more about the previous rounds of ASHR.

Would the research study be a good fit for me?

If you would like to contribute to the understandings of health of Chinese people in Australia, and fit the below criteria, we sincerely invite you to participate in this research:

  • Aged between 18 and 69 years; and
  • Being able to read and understand the simplified Chinese script; and
  • Being able to speak and understand Mandarin Chinese; and
  • Living in Australia (including citizens, permanent residents, people on working or student visas, etc)

What would happen if I took part in the research study?

We will arrange a 2-hour online focus group discussion with eligible participants in a few weeks.  We will use Zoom to conduct the focus groups.

The groups will be conducted in Mandarin. Each group will have a maximum of 8 participants.

You will receive a payment of AU$50 after the focus group to compensate you for your time (either cash or a supermarket e-voucher, TBD by the finance dept of the Kirby Institute).

What will happen during a focus group?

The facilitators will invite group members to comment on the Chinese translation of the ASHR questionnaire, and to discuss their understanding of some specific terms and concepts in the questionnaire.

The questionnaire includes a range of questions about sexual health and relationships (including topics like sexual difficulties, reproductive history, sexual coercion and intimate partner violence, information about sexually transmitted infections along with knowledge and attitudes related to sexuality and sexual health).

The questionnaire topics seem very personal, will I need to disclose my own experiences?

The main purposes of the focus groups are to understand how to translate an English questionnaire in a more culturally sensitive manner, and to explore concepts of health and relationships among Chinese people in Australia.

Therefore, in the focus group, questions are framed in such a way that you will not be required to disclose your own experiences in relation to survey questions.

For example, for questions about domestic violence, we will not ask participants to disclose their own personal experiences related to domestic violence. Instead, we focus on how they understand the term “domestic violence” and if they think the questions make cultural sense.

What if I don’t want to answer a question?

No worries. You can refuse to answer any questions, or to simply not take up the opportunity to take part in the group discussion on that topic.

What personal information will you need from me?

Your privacy matters to us. No personal identifiable data (e.g. your real name, address, name of workplace or school, etc) will be collected in the research.

All study data will be kept confidentially.

Will the discussion be recorded?

The discussion will be video recorded, but only audio files will be saved.

You do not need to turn on your video camera if you do not wish to. You are not required to enter your real name on Zoom.
