This year, by referendum, we all have an opportunity to make a difference to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and to the process surrounding how decisions affecting their lives are made.
The Kirby Institute at UNSW Sydney affirms its commitment to the Uluru Statement from the Heart and supports a Yes vote in the upcoming referendum for the establishment of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament, enshrined in the Constitution.
The Kirby Institute supports and advocates for equitable outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We conduct our work guided by the principle of co-design. We aim to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have a strong, respected voice in leading the conception, design, conduct, interpretation, and communication of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health research.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have a fundamental right to self-determination. We acknowledge that there is a long way to go until we achieve equity and justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
The Kirby Institute acknowledges that there are a range of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices contributing to the referendum discussion. We support a diversity of views and acknowledge the complexity of these discussions. A Voice to Parliament, enshrined in the constitution, is one step forward in an ongoing journey to genuine reconciliation. Therefore, as an institute dedicated to health equity, the Kirby Institute believes that a Yes vote supporting a Voice to Parliament will be a positive step in the right direction, giving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people a meaningful forum to engage in decisions regarding policy and legislation that affect their lives.
We all have a role to play in justice and truth telling. It is only through acknowledgement and education that healing and reconciliation can occur. The Uluru Statement from the Heart is an invitation from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for all Australians to walk together along the path towards reconciliation. By supporting a Yes vote in the upcoming referendum, we support a healthier, more equitable and just Australia.
