James Gillespie is Hon Associate Professor in Health Policy in the Menzies Centre for Health Policy and the Sydney School of Public Health, University of Sydney. He has a PhD from the University of Cambridge. His research has covered the history and politics of global health organisation, comparative public policy and of the Australian health care system.

He has been a chief investigator on Australian National Health and Medical Research Council–funded projects researching management of chronic illness, care integration and research translation into policy. Recent projects have included evaluation of programs building public/private partnerships in mental health and the better integration of health care between health care and community settings. He is currently a CI in the NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence on Integrated Community Care for People with Complex Multi-morbidities. He established the Masters in Health Policy in the School of Public Health and recently developed a joint program with the University’s MBA program on ‘the Business of Health’.

His books include The Price of Health: Australian Governments and Medical Politics (Cambridge University Press 1991, 2002) and (with Anne-marie Boxall) Making Medicare: The Politics of Universal Health Care in Australia (University of New South Wales Press, 2013).
