Bequests

Leaving a gift to the Kirby Institute in your Will as a legacy for future generations is a very personal decision to make.

There are many reasons why people choose to leave a bequest to the Kirby Institute. Each gift, whether large or small, will support our researchers to make life-saving medical discoveries.

General information

It is important that the wording in a bequest clearly expresses your wishes. It is recommended that you consult your legal advisor in the preparation of your Will or amendment to your existing Will. A bequest can either be made for an unrestricted or a specific purpose.

Unrestricted purpose

These are especially valuable to the Kirby Institute because they allow us to fulfil our highest priorities at the time your bequest arrives.

"I give to the Kirby Institute at the University of New South Wales (57 195 873 179) the sum of $xx or xx%, share, residue of my estate, which I direct to be paid free of all expenses and duties of whatever kind and I express the wish that

(a) such sum be used to support the Kirby Institute and their priorities and

(b) I express the wish that this be done in the name/memory of [insert your chosen name]
and I direct that the receipt from the Kirby Institute at University of New South Wales shall be sufficient discharge to my trustee."

Restricted purpose

Restricted gifts can support important Kirby Institute initiatives such as scholarships, research areas, facilities, etc.

Definition of bequests

There are a number of descriptions used when talking about the type of bequest you might consider leaving to the Kirby Institute. Following are some commonly understood definitions for the way you can structure a bequest:

Specific bequest

A gift of assets such as a home, land, money, shares, art, or other item of value.

Residual bequest

The remainder of your estate after specific gifts have been disbursed.

Percentage bequest

The nominated gift is a percentage of the Estate.

Pecuniary bequest

Refers to leaving a gift of a specific dollar amount.
