The Kirby Institute is pleased to present:

Dr John Zaunders - "What really happens to CD4 T cells during early HIV-1 infection?"

Abstract:
The decline of CD4 T cells as a result of HIV-1 infection is complex and prolonged.

However, it is widely believed that primary HIV-1 infection results in a massive initial depletion, particularly in gut-associated lymphoid tissue.

Our studies have shown that very early antiretroviral intervention largely normalizes CD4 cell counts, and the initial depletion is not as large as believed.

In fact, the immune response to HIV-1 may actually increase the number of CD4 T cells that are recruited to fight the viral infection.
