About the Project

Consultation, development and establish of a mechanism to monitor needle and syringe distribution in Australia(National Needle and Syringe Program (NSP) Minimum Dataset).

Rationale

The Australian Department of Health, through the BBV and STI Prevention Program,  has contracted VHEPP to establish a National NSP Minimum Dataset to support the National HIV and HCV Strategies 2014 – 2017 and the National BBV & STI Surveillance and Monitoring Report.

Aims

To establish a National Needle and Syringe Program (NSP) Minimum Dataset.

Design & Method

The first phase of the project involves mapping existing jurisdictional Needle and Syringe Program (NSP) data collection systems. The second phase aims to clarify the purpose and identify national and jurisdictional needs with respect to the proposed National NSP Minimum Dataset, and will include a national consensus meeting of relevant stakeholders. The third phase of the project will focus on operationalising the data collection mechanism to produce the first NSP MDS National Data Report (NDR) followed by a further round of stakeholder feedback in order to ensure acceptability and sustainability, identify gaps and constraints and refine and improve templates. A second NSP MDS NDR will examine trends over time (first two years).
